Supporting Plan [SP 01/20] (revised June 2020)

New Zealand is a member of the Pacific Tsunami Warning System (PTWS). PTWS is an international system under the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. It issues timely information and warnings about tsunami generated in the Pacific Basin. In New Zealand, GNS Science/GeoNet geological hazard and sea level monitoring complements PTWS. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is responsible for national tsunami advisories and warnings.

This plan outlines the national procedures used to tell local authorities, national agencies and media of possible tsunami that could affect New Zealand.
